About Springstead
The Springstead area is a beautiful land of forests, lakes and streams that
has not been over commercialized or overrun by people. If you're looking
for that secluded spot to rest and relax or actively participate in outdoor
recreation, look no further -- for this is the place for that "dream vacation".
Wildlife in Natural Haunts
Hunters, photographers, bird watchers, artists, or just plain
wildlife
lovers each enjoy in their own way the wild creatures that live in our woods and
waters. The game species that attract the hunters are deer, bear, coyotes,
rabbits, ruffed grouse and waterfowl, which they stalk with gun or bow and
arrow. Bird watchers are especially intrigued by the large birds of
prey such as eagles, osprey, hawks and owls, plus the wide variety of songbirds
and water birds (like the Loon). The photographer thrills to the sight of
deer, beaver, otter or mink at the water's edge while trying to record that
beautiful sunrise or sunset.
Warm Weather Activities
In spring the woods are filled with the bright colors of wild
flowers
and the songbirds fill the air with music. The young birds and animals
entertain visitors with their antics. It's time once again to of warm
weather activities to enjoy in our northwoods such as boating, picnicking,
swimming, water-skiing, golfing, sightseeing, eating out, hiking, biking, and of
coarse, just plain loafing. Camping is becoming more
popular and for those who like to rough it, campsites are available on the
islands of the Flambeau Flowage. Our rivers provide canoeing opportunities
and the Flambeau River trip is a must for many. Fall is colorama Time and
hikes or auto tours through the brightly colored forests are in order.
It's all here for you to enjoy in Springstead.
Winter is Beautiful
Winter doesn't have to be a dull time of the year. Snowmobiling is an
ideal way of enjoying the season on
hundreds
of miles of marked and groomed trails in the area. Many people have taken
up cross-country skiing with more prepared trails becoming available.
Snowshoeing and ice-fishing are always popular and the Midwest's best downhill
ski slopes are less than 50-miles to the north.
Wilderness Forests
Much of the Springstead appeal relates to the fact that the
area is almost completely wooded. We are surrounded by over one hundred
thousand acres of national, state, county and Indian forests, plus many
thousands of additional acres of private and company-owned forests. This
is truly one of the few wilderness settings left in the Midwest.
Secluded Lakes and Hidden Streams
Springstead offers lakes of all sizes... the tiny gem set deep
in the forest, seen only by those who are willing to hike awhile to see it... or
the giant 22,000-acre Turtle-Flambeau Flowage. This large body of water
was created by a high dam at the junction of the Flambeau and Turtle Rivers.
It contains hundreds of islands and under its
waters
are the original seven lakes, five creeks and 35 miles of rivers creating a
great variety of water depths and fish habitat. Stream sizes also vary
from the small, cold water creeks to the large rivers such as the Flambeau,
Turtle and Bear.
Fishing - for Fun or Trophies
Having such a range of water types means Springstead has just as many types
of fishing. Would you like to try for a world's record musky? Many
outdoor writers believe this lunker is swimming in one of Springstead's many
lakes. Or would you rather fish for walleyes, northern pikes, sturgeon,
bass or crappies? Springstead has them all in abundance. Do your
kids have fun catching sunfish, perch, and bluegills? There are hours of
enjoyment waiting for them. How about the trout fisherman? Most of
our creeks contain brookies and some of the large streams have browns and
rainbows. Many lakes have public boat landings and guides are also
available.
